Ramjattan incapable of carrying out responsibility for Prison Service

first_imgDear Editor,The Indian Action Committee (IAC) is outraged and deeply disturbed at the photographs published in the local media recording dangerous prisoners at the New Amsterdam Prison enjoying themselves and brandishing bottles of expensive foreign liquor while appearing to smoke cigarettes and marijuana. The IAC is of the strongest opinion that this lawlessness must be brought to an end immediately and is calling on President David Granger to ensure that all those persons responsible for permitting this egregious lawlessness must either be called upon to resign or be dismissed. The IAC also believes that Public Security Minister and Vice President Khemraj Ramjattan has proved himself to be incapable, inept and incompetent to carry out the political responsibility for the Guyana Prison Service and given the fact that 17 prisoners lost their lives at the Camp Street Prison in March 2017; the destruction of the Camp Street Prison with the loss of one Prison Officer in July 2017; the inadequate facilities followed by the escape of prisoners from the Lusignan Prison also in July 2017; and now this outrage at the New Amsterdam Prison in May 2018, all occurring under his watch, is enough basis for his immediate removal from this crucial position pertaining to the nation’s security. The, IAC, therefore, is calling upon President David Granger to immediately request Minister Ramjattan to resign or failing which to dismiss him.The IAC also is of the belief that the Director of Prisons, Gladwin Samuels is also incapable, inept and incompetent to administer the prison system of Guyana and the organisation is calling on President Granger to request his resignation or failing which to dismiss him.The IAC is calling upon President Granger to investigate this matter thoroughly and identify all those prison officials culpable in allowing dangerous prisoners access to cellphones, alcohol, and narcotics and to place them before the courts. The IAC recognises that the Guyana Prison Service needs new, strong, strict and stern management now since prisons are places that require stiff discipline and, therefore, it may be necessary for the military to be brought in to ensure that order be restored to the prisons until a new cadre of responsible prison officers are trained.Yours sincerely,Indian ActionCommitteelast_img read more

USDA offers conservation assistance to landowners to protect wetlands, agricultural lands and grasslands

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) plans to invest $450 million this year through the Agricultural Conservation Easement Program (ACEP) to help private landowners, tribes, land trusts and other groups wanting to restore and protect critical wetlands and protect agricultural lands and grasslands.“For over 25 years, NRCS has worked with landowners to protect their wetlands and agricultural lands,” NRCS Chief Matthew Lohr said. “Conservation easements are important tools for people who are trying to improve soil health, water and air quality and wildlife habitat on their land.”ACEP provides assistance to landowners and eligible entities helping conserve, restore and protect wetlands and productive agricultural lands and grasslands. NRCS accepts ACEP applications year-round, but applications are ranked and funded by enrollment period, which have application deadlines set by the states. Many states have upcoming deadlines this spring.Wetland Reserve EasementsThrough ACEP Wetland Reserve Easements, NRCS helps landowners and tribes restore, enhance and protect wetland ecosystems. NRCS and the landowner work together to develop a plan for the restoration and maintenance of the easement.“Seventy-five percent of the nation’s wetlands are situated on private and tribal lands,” Lohr said. “Wetlands provide many benefits, including critical habitat for a wide array of wildlife species. They also store floodwaters, clean and recharge groundwater, sequester carbon, trap sediment and filter pollutants for clean water.”Wetland conservation easements are either permanent, for 30 years or the maximum extent allowed by state law. Tribal landowners have the added option of enrolling in 30-year non-easement restoration contracts. Eligible lands include: farmed or converted wetlands that can successfully be restored; croplands or grasslands subject to flooding; and riparian areas that link protected wetland areas.Agricultural Land EasementsThrough ACEP Agricultural Land Easements (ALE), NRCS provides funds to eligible entities to purchase easements on private working lands. This program helps keep working lands working, especially in areas experiencing development pressure.Eligible cooperating entities include state or local agencies, non-profits and tribes. Landowners continue to own their property but voluntarily enter into a legal agreement with a cooperating entity to purchase an easement. The cooperating entity applies for matching funds from NRCS for the purchase of an easement from the landowner, permanently protecting its agricultural use and conservation values. Landowners do not apply directly to NRCS for funding under ALE.Easements are permanent. Eligible lands include privately owned cropland, rangeland, grassland, pastureland and forestlands.More informationACEP remains a major part of the recently passed 2018 Farm Bill. Program implementation will continue during fiscal year 2019 with some minor changes.Landowners and tribes interested in wetland reserve easements and partners interested in agricultural land easements should contact their local USDA service center.last_img read more

Military Families Getting United Through Reading

first_img Reading Room on base with United Through Reading Return to article. Long DescriptionUS Air Force [Reading Room creates bedtime stories for children back home by Capt. Phillip Cortez, July 18, 2016, CC0]One of the most challenging parts of school for many kids is learning how to read. And with the school year getting back into full swing, many children are facing these educational challenges for the first time. For military families, it can be even more of an obstacle. Military families that are operating with one parent, or for other family members filling in for a deployed parent, this process can be more challenging. Deployment brings about more long term separations for military parents and their children. So what are some ways that parents away on military deployment can spend quality time with their kids that also bolster their education? One such resource is called the Morale, Welfare, and Recreation Digital Library featured in this article from Military One Source. This library provides eBooks and audio books on various topics and includes online resources for kids, teens, and adults. This online library is a great resource and a one stop shop for military service members and their families. It is also 100% free for military families.Another great resource to promote family quality time and education is United Through Reading. With United Through Reading, military families can still read together even when they are apart. This is great for kids learning to read, struggling with reading, or really just like to read. Parents can record themselves reading a book, then send the recording home. At home, the children can play the video and the non-deployed parent records the child’s reaction. For older kids and teens, they can make their own read-aloud video to send back to a deployed Mom or Dad.United Through Reading has nearly 200 recording stations around the world that deployed military service members can utilize and send videos to their loved ones at home. A great How-To for getting started with United Through Reading is in this article from Military.com. There is also a video included to learn more.No matter the obstacle or distance, great organizations and resources like these are doing great things for military families and ways to help keep them connected.ReferencesMilitary.com (2019). 5 Steps to Get United Through Reading. It had been widely talked about that Riel was trying to start up an air ambulance company in the country but failed due to a denial by TCIG for the requisite permissions. It was believed Riel was working without a permit. Riel was fined $1,000 and his wife, $500 and the pair with their children have to be out of the country and en route to Canada by Wednesday. Nearly two weeks ago, Patrick Riel was arrested and jailed for overstaying and allegedly working illegally in the TCI but a call saw the former EMS consultant with the government, released. Magnetic Media was told Riel has been enjoying a lot of preferential pardons for his alleged illegal behavior including the final charge against him. John Masters is the Director of Public Prosecutions and said if Riel and his wife fail to do what the court has required of them, they will be re-arrested. Both Patrick Riel and his wife, Jacqueline Nicole Bassard entered a guilty plea in the court of Magistrate Clifton Warner.
