LOCKN’ Opens With Charlottesville Remembrance, Double Stacked Sets by Umphrey’s and String Cheese

first_imgFans from near and far descended upon Arrington, Virginia in droves to attend the 5th Annual LOCKN’ Festival this week. Newly held on the Infinity Downs Farm property, big changes were in store for this year. Event organizers changed the layout of the venue to just the Downs area, helping to create a more centralized environment for attendees to get around. The Blue Ridge Bowl now holds both the Main Stage and Relix Stage, allowing for easier foot traffic between the two. Food and merchandise vendors also line the sides of the modified concert fields. The new LOCKN’ layout has the ability to hold 20,000 people with drastically improved sight lines. With the recent horrific events that took place in Charlottesville, only a short 45 minutes away, positive vibes and celebration of music could not have happened at a better, and more needed, time. Many attendees wore purple, as well as purple ribbons, in remembrance of Heather Heyer, who lost her life during the Charlottesville attack. LOCKN’ is not only a coming together of musical artists in collaborations on stage, but a coming together of the musical community as whole, with fans and artists alike. The vibe around the venue feels like a giant hug of love and acceptance, no matter what your background. LOCKN’ truly is an interlocking musical event for the entire music community. For fans who can not attend the festival, a free LOCKN’ stream is available, courtesy of Ben & Jerry’s, Airstream, and YouTube, in conjunction with Relix and Headcount. Viewers are encouraged to make a donation, with proceeds going to the Heal Charlottesville Fund. Funds raised will go towards assisting local residents seeking trauma counseling, supporting victims involved in the car attack who need help with their medical expenses, and towards helping law enforcement to prevent future attacks. Click here for more information regarding donations, as well as how to link up to the live stream.Wednesday night allowed early entry ticket holders to set up, helping to alleviate congestion when gates opened to everyone at 6 AM on Thursday morning. With much cooler temperatures expected over the duration, attendees will be a lot more comfortable this year, without having to drip in sweat as they did through last year’s oppressive heat. In addition, dust levels will be at a minimum, due to moving the event from within the horse track to among grassy fields. This year, a new Terrapin Porch stage in Garcia’s Forest will feature early morning and late night performances. Besides music, bike trails, early morning yoga, and trips to the Tye River are just some of the activities available for attendees to enjoy over the four days. While fans continued to stream into the venue on Thursday, the Grateful Dead’s documentary “Long Strange Trip” was shown on the Main Stage. It kept the crowd entertained before the music began in the early evening. The welcoming ceremony featured local emergency personnel lining the stage as a giant American flag hung from the rafters behind. LOCKN’ promoters Peter Shapiro and Dave Frey both spoke to the crowd before the entire venue stood for moment of silence in remembrance of the recent events that took place in Charlottesville. The Mount Zion First African Baptist Choir gave a heartfelt performance with “The Star Spangled Banner” followed by “Amazing Grace,” bringing tears to the eyes of the crowd. “The Saints Go Marching In” brought up the energy before local band, and Rockn’ to LOCKN’ winner, Kendall Street Company took to the stage, opening the four day event on a high note. The highlight on Thursday featured a deliciously musical jam sandwich as Umphrey’s McGee and String Cheese Incident flip flopped two sets each, providing a double dose of stacked goodness for the earholes. With both bands playing twice in the evening, festival goers who showed up later in the night were guaranteed to catch either of their sets. The Disco Biscuits gave their debut performance at LOCKN’ with a late night set on the Relix stage, while Nicole Atkins Band had fans dancing late into the night with their set on the Terrapin Porch within the magical trees of Garcia’s Forest.Stay tuned for Friday’s run down, with sets by Phil Lesh, Gov’t Mule, and Joe Russo’s Almost Dead, to name a few.Words by Sarah BourquePhotos by Sam Shinault PhotographyLOCKN’ 2017: Photos by Sam Shinault Load remaining imageslast_img read more

FIANNA FAIL COULD RUN THREE CANDIDATES IN GENERAL ELECTION – McATEER

first_imgAs preparations for the general election take shape it is emerging that the Fianna Fail grassroots across Donegal are in favour of nominating three candidates. The Tirconail Tribune Editor John McAteer reports that the names emerging as popular favourites within the FF grassroots are Deputy Charlie McConalogue, Cllr. Ciaran Brogan and Cllr. Seamus O’Domhnaill in the West Donegal Gaeltacht.Party sources say that having a candidate in West Donegal is vital to their chances to take two seats in the new Donegal five seat constituency. All three candidates have a substantial number of registered support should the decision be made one of the party’s rare conventions. However we understand that in the peculiar confrontational nature of party politics the decision will be made by party headquarters, similar to 2011 and more recently in the local elections in the Letterkenny area.It has also emerged that one section of Fianna Fail is considering their position insofar as contesting a nomination and a number of meetings have taken place in recent weeks.Key players have told the Tribune that these meetings have not made any real progress on a number of matters including an issue about the cost of party membership. The cost to join the party is a mere €20.There is a clear demand, we are told, for a new Independent party in Donegal… but with a proper whip system since nothing else can pull together the strands of support needed to have a cohesive chance of success in a general election. However Cllr. John O’Donnell has already thrown his hat into the ring while at the other end of the constituency, outgoing Deputy Thomas Pringle, with the support of a number of Independent Cllrs. will start as a favourite to retain his seat.Meanwhile the latest opinion polls are spelling disaster for Fianna Fail nationally. They are on 19%: up less than two percentage points since their fall from grace in 2011 when their loss of more than 50 seats was their worst performance since they were founded in 1926.Their four year period in exile has done little for party morale and here in Donegal there is a certain amount of support to sack Michael Martin and replace him with someone else, anyone else. And Eamon O’Cuiv is the most mentioned future leader of the party since it would seem appropriate in the shadow of the 100th anniversary of the 1916 Rising.Fianna Fail is facing a major battle to win a second seat in Donegal but that pales into insignificance to the task facing Fine Gael. The last general election saw FG having a field day in Donegal’s two constituencies but the perceived political wisdom would say they don’t stand a snowball’s chance of retaining these seats in a reduced five-seater scenario. However much will depend on the next Budget if they are to win back the trust that so many people placed in them in 2011. The local elections were a catastrophe for them and a six seat group on Donegal County Council is a very poor return for a party in Government. Senior FG grassroot members who’ve spoken to us recently say the party structure is at a low ebb and the fear for their fate in the election. They point to water charges, cuts in social welfare payments, the hospital beds and waiting lists fiasco that the party promised to fix as all being key issues in public anger that the FG Leadership has not addressed. And despite the heavy duty public relations spin since in relation to job creation and the ending of emigration, the public reaction to these FG claims border on incredulity.Sinn Fein will be confident about retaining their two seats: but on a good day and with the right candidate they could take an extra seat. Party sources rue the loss of Cora Harvey since her stature, location and gender would have ticked all the boxes in mid Donegal for the Shinners. But the name of Cllr. Gary Doherty is being put about as a possible third runner…as always SF is saying nothing at this early stage of the campaign. The general election results from 2011 gave Fine Gael a huge increase nationally taking 76 seats: an increase of 25. And this result saw FG claim a share of 36.1%: up by 8.8%.In stark contrast this was the FF Election from Hell. Their seats tally dropped to 20: down by 51 but worse still their first preference vote halved and they ended up with 17.2%.Labour gained 17 seats to take a total of 37 and more importantly they won a share of 19.4%: up by 9.3% since their previous outing. At the same time Sinn Fein captured 14 seats which was a gain of nine: they won a share of 9.9%. Today they are Ireland’s leading party, according to the opinion polls on 26%.Fine Gael is on 25%, Fianna Fáil on 19% and Labour goes up to 6%. Independents take a big, down to 23% from a recent high of 32%.Satisfaction with the Government is on 23%, while the four main party leaders see their satisfaction with voters go up.72% of those polled say Leo Varadkar being gay makes no difference to his chances of being Taoiseach.FIANNA FAIL COULD RUN THREE CANDIDATES IN GENERAL ELECTION – McATEER was last modified: February 19th, 2015 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Tags:donegalfianna failTirconail Tribunelast_img read more

Focus on Pittsburgh: Without Roethlisberger, are Steelers a threat to 49ers?

first_imgAs blasphemous as it may sound for a team that hasn’t been close to .500 in five years, over-confidence could be one of the 49ers’ biggest adversaries heading into Sunday’s game against the Steelers. The 0-2 Steelers make their first visit to Levi’s with six-time Pro Bowl quarterback Ben Roethlisberger gone or the season, with top play-maker Juju Smith-Schuster yet to score a touchdown, and with a defensive unit that sometimes looks like the antithesis of the “Steel Curtain” from yesteryear.N …last_img read more

Weeds to Your Health

first_imgWhy traverse the rain forests for miracle drugs, EurekAlert asks, when the weeds we yank out of our gardens may hold promise for curing a host of common health woes.  John Richard Stepp (University of Florida) claims that fast-growing, herbaceous field plants are more likely to hold useful substances than those deep in jungles.  Indigenous Americans tended to gather more medicinal plants from the fields than the forests.  Though weeds constitute only 3% of plant species, they make up a third of the plants used in pharmaceuticals, he discovered.    Stepp also worked among indigenous peoples and found they had considerable knowledge about their native plants.  In Chiapas, he found that “Mayan residents use weeds for all sorts of day-to-day illnesses, such as common colds, upset stomachs, skin rashes, and aches and sprains.”  He talked with 4- and 5-year old Mayan children who could name 100 local plants.  “An American kid might be able to name 100 Pokemon characters, but if you ask him the names of three plants, he would probably have a real hard time,” he remarked.    Stepp and other botanists feel there is a veritable living pharmacy right outside the door and along trailsides.  This overlooked treasury is readily available, costs nothing, and is often more effective than synthetic drugs.  But heed their caution: “Americans may be able to get similar benefits from weeds as do people in developing countries, although he warns that people shouldn’t experiment on their own.”How many native plants in your neighborhood can you name, and how many do you know how to use?  Teaching your children about local native plants is much more profitable than letting them waste time watching Pokemon or whatever the latest fad on TV.  For today’s jaded youth, it’s a pretty cool discovery that it’s possible to reach down and pick a wild plant to eat, use another as a natural sunscreen or insect repellant, and find one to make soap or rope.  You must exercise great caution, however, since there are poisons and irritants to avoid (remember the joke about poison ivy?  It’s an “all-natural herb that does wonders to your skin.”)  Find a knowledgeable teacher, preferably part Indian guide and part PhD botanist, and use a reliable book on wild plants.  Be extra wary of mushrooms, since even experts can confuse edible ones with poisonous look-alikes.  But you never know; learning how to use wild plants could save your life some day.  Camps, recreation centers and parks should incorporate plant lore into their activities.    The study of native plants also provides an opportunity for research labs to apply good scientific method, employing carefully controlled experiments, to make discoveries for the benefit of mankind – like science used to be done.  It requires no Darwinian storytelling, either, weed reckon.(Visited 10 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0last_img read more

Gift Ideas For Techies And Regular Folk [Infographic]

Typically this is the time of year when tech prices are cut2. Tech gifts usually last for a while. But how do you know what tech gizmo or service people want? Tthat’s the real question, isn’t it?Start with this rule of thumb: Don’t buy someone a smartphone or computer unless you know exactly what they want. Purchasing such items as a surprise gift – unless it’s for a young child – usually doesn’t work out very well, since the odds are you won’t be able to figure what will really make them happy. All is not lost, though. There’s plenty of tech out there that makes a great gift for that special someone. I’ll start with some cool stuff that I’m either buying or coveting. It’s a little weird to recommend a stand-alone camera in an age where every mobile phone comes with its own camera. But frankly, for anything more than quick snapshots, most phone cameras suck. Productivity: How to Make More Time

first_img Essential Reading! Get my 3rd book: Eat Their Lunch “The first ever playbook for B2B salespeople on how to win clients and customers who are already being serviced by your competition.” Buy Now The excuse many of us make for not doing what we know we should be doing is, “I don’t have time.” The truth is just the opposite. Time is the only thing you have. Whether you have enough of it is mostly a matter of what you do with it. If you wish you had more time, here is how you make more time.Determine Your PrioritiesThe very best way to ensure you have enough time for what’s most important is to determine your priorities (or discover them). If you don’t make values-based decisions, deciding why one project is more valuable than another, you will struggle to make smart decisions about what you do with your time.To determine your priorities, you need a list of your goals. People who don’t know what they want often end up getting caught up in “the drift,” allowing external forces to move them in some direction. “The drift” will take you in the wrong direction and faster than you might recognize. (You really should read this post about “The Drift. You should also read this post about Intentionality and Massive Action. Both are worth your time.)Priorities are what prevent you from being pulled in directions that don’t serve you. If you want to be productive, determining your priorities is the best place to start. Your priorities are like anchors that hold you in place.Plan Your WorkIf you are like most people, you roll out of bed, open your email, and decide what you are going to do with your day. Opening your email first thing in the morning is to put other people’s priorities above your own. What’s worse is waiting to start your day to decide what to do with it.If you want to find more time, you will find it in abundance on a blank calendar. Your calendar tells the truth about your priorities. Because you have determined your priorities, you know what’s most important. Putting what’s most important on that calendar before the week starts ensures you have time for the things that matter. Will your plan always work as written? It’s unlikely. Will you feel as if you have more time, more control, and get more done? Yes, you will. Can you get back on the horse when you get thrown? You must.Your intentionality here makes an enormous difference in how you feel about how much time you have.Eliminate DistractionsOne of the most pernicious threats to having enough time is the overwhelming number of distractions. Let’s put these distractions into two categories. The first categories are the distractions caused by the “always on-always available” world in which we now find ourselves. The second area is the distractions we choose ourselves. The communication tools we use are always on, and they are always available. Despite the enormous value they bring our lives, they are not without their downside. Anyone can send you an email at any time, about any matter (urgent or mundane), and make any request they can conjure up, at any time, day or night. The same is true of text messaging, except for the text you receive is often accompanied by a little chime to let you know it demands your attention. You are also likely to have some sort of message service open in your browser, with your status set to available, advertising your willingness to be distracted by the rest of your organization (a sure sign of a lack of priorities). Most of us work in an environment that some might describes as having an “open-door policy,” where people can walk into your office (if you still have one) and interrupt your work. The policy might better be expressed as an “open to all distractions policy.”The second category, the distractions you choose, can be even more challenging for many. The internet and social apps are omnipresent, and because we are social animals, we are engineered to want to know what other humans are doing. We were addicted to gossip long before the social apps, but those apps have been engineered to feed the addiction, with the primary metric of success how long the platform can you to spend on a platform (Like a rat that pushes a button for a small bit of food). Unless your priority is “waste more time,” the social apps and the internet shouldn’t dominate your time.If you want to find more time, removing these distractions by blocking time and training the people around you to respect those blocks, will provide you with many more hours in your day. Also, a good amount of self-discipline, or what we might call “Me Management” will give you back your wasted time.Increase the Speed at Which You WorkI would never suggest that you don’t do good work. You should try to do exceptional work (I have ended every newsletter for the last five years with the directive to “do good work,” because it matters). The quality of your work is the quality of your outcomes. The quality of your results is the quality of your life. But that doesn’t mean you should dilly dally and take more time than necessary in producing those outcomes. In ninety uninterrupted minutes, you can make massive progress on a project, task, or outcome. If you work with focus and a sense of urgency, you can do what others do in ninety minutes in sixty. In doing so, you will have just found yourself a half hour. If you focus and act with urgency during three blocks of ninety minutes, peeling back a half hour from each, you gain an hour and a half each day. Over a week, you get back seven and a half hours. You have more time than you imagine if you focus it on what is vital for periods long enough to make progress.Don’t Create ReworkI wasn’t always enamored with ideas like LEAN. And while I still don’t believe you can shrink or cut your way to greatness, the elimination of waste is a game-changer. Wasted motion is wasted time, especially if it means doing work over again and touching anything more than once.If you are going to do something, giving it your full attention and focus improves the outcome. If you want to waste time, do something over because you didn’t do right the first time. It pays to be outcome-oriented and put forth the effort to achieve it without expending additional time and energy later.Improve Your Energy and Your Capacity for WorkImproving your energy and your capacity for work could have been the first point here. You are, after all, the primary resource you have through which to produce the results you want. Taking care of that asset is job one because it is a huge variable when it comes to working. If you are reading this, you are likely a knowledge worker (it is doubtful you work in a coal mine, and your hands are more likely to have carpal tunnel than callouses). Your brain lives in your body. Both of them need rest and exercise. They also need nutrition, sleep, hydration, and stress management. The better you take care of your physical self, the better your mental self. When you have more energy, you have a greater capacity for work. There is more time available to you, if you determine your priorities, plan your work, eliminate distractions, work with a sense of urgency, eliminate wasted effort, and improve your energy.last_img read more
