Now, the streaming service is adding one more, though it doesn’t come from Marvel or DC. Netflix has ordered a 10-episode series from Universal Cable Productions and Dark Horse Entertainment based on The Umbrella Academy. If the show turns out to be anything like the comic, expect some superhero television wholly unlike any you’ve seen on Netflix before.Written by My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way with art by Gabriel Bá, The Umbrella Academy follows a dysfunctional family of superheroes. Think the Fantastic Four, only there are eight of them, and they like each other even less. The TV series begins with their father mysteriously dying. They’re forced to work together to figure out what happened, but their personalities constantly push them apart. It’s a unique, dark and humorously twisted take on the superhero genre. Bá’s art has an ethereal, dreamlike quality that could make this the best-looking superhero series on TV.In a press release, Netflix Vice President of Original Content said, “What drew us to The Umbrella Academy is that it’s wholly unique, visual and stylized. These aren’t the usual superheroes, and this series will embrace the singular tone of the graphic novels — dark yet humorous, supernatural yet grounded in reality. We’re excited to see this world and introduce these unforgettable heroes to Netflix members around the globe.”The show is still early in development, but Way is involved as a co-executive producer. As for the script, the pilot has been written. The pilot script was adapted from the comics by Jeremy Slater, who created last year’s excellent and terrifying Exorcist TV series. Now, I’m really excited for this. The Umbrella Academy will be available on Netflix sometime in 2018.Let us know what you like about Geek by taking our survey.last_img read more
