He is an outstanding addition to our coaching staff.”Johnson spent the last 18 years of his career at Penn State, including overseeing the entire defensive line for the last 14 years. He also spent 20 years coaching high school football in Maryland and Virginia, according to the release.“In just a few hours I can tell that Ohio State cares about football,” Johnson said in the release. “There is a winning tradition that is important here. They care about academics and they care about players, and I like the way coach Urban Meyer approaches things. He’s a great teacher. He is very organized and this is what I was looking for.”Johnson is set to replace former Buckeye defensive line coach Mike Vrabel, who announced via Twitter Jan. 9 he was leaving OSU to take a job with the Houston Texans of the NFL. Vrabel’s jump to the NFL comes after Houston announced the hiring of former Penn State head coach Bill O’Brien Jan. 3.While coaching at Penn State, six of Johnson’s defensive linemen were first-round NFL Draft selections, most recently Jared Odrick in 2010. Johnson also coached seven first-team All-Americans on the defensive line in his time at State College, Pa., including Courtney Brown, who was picked No. 1 overall in the NFL Draft in 2000.Since 1996, Johnson’s first season with the Nittany Lions, no other Big Ten team has had as many players from one position win Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year than the five defensive ends Johnson coached.“I am really impressed with the Ohio State players. I just met a group of players, walked out of the room and thought, ‘wow,’ these are kinds of players I want to coach,” Johnson said. “They were really impressive.”Johnson, who grew up in Williamston, N.C., coached a defense that led the nation in sacks from 2005-09. He focuses on fundamentals and forming relationships with the players he coaches, according to the release.“I’m a relationship guy and I think in order to get the best out of your players you have to develop relationships,” Johnson said in a released statement. “I’m also a teacher. I like to teach the basic fundamentals of football. I want guys who are fundamentally sound and have the ability to play fast and to play relentless.”Johnson’s salary was not immediately available Wednesday evening, per OSU. The man he is replacing at OSU, Vrabel, earned a base salary of $291,004 last season, according to the USA TODAY coaches database.According to PennLive, Johnson was offered to remain as defensive line coach for the Nittany Lions by their new head coach — James Franklin — but declined. The Buckeyes are set to open their 2014 campaign Aug. 30 against Navy at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore. read more

Khedira still bothered by Germanys WC performance

first_imgThe German midfielder has been criticized for his performance with the German national team, but still believes he can give the team something goodFor Juventus midfielder Samy Khedira, the performance of the German national team at the 2018 FIFA World Cup is still bothering him.According to an article published by ESPN, the footballer believes he had his worst performance of his career with the national team.“After a good season and nine goals with Juventus and with full fitness, I played my two worst matches at the World Cup,” Khedira wrote on Instagram.“That was really bad. That we did not work together as a team and were eliminated in the group stage still weighs on me.”Germany finished last in their group after being defeated by Mexico and South Korea, winning in the last minute against Sweden for their only three points.Maurizio Sarri, JuventusMaurizio Sarri satisfied despite Juventus’ draw at Fiorentina Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Maurizio Sarri was satisfied with Juventus’ performance on Saturday afternoon after finishing a tough game at Fiorentina 0-0.“It must continue to be an honor for any active player to play for this country, this association, and this team,” Khedira said.“If there are better players at the moment then I will accept it, but should I be nominated because the coach believes I can help the [team], then for me, it is always an honor and an obligation.”last_img read more

Valdano reflects on Barcelona and Real Madrids defeats

first_imgArgentine legend Jorge Valdano, analyzed Real Madrid’s defeat at Sevilla in detail this Thursday and how The Best awards affected the squad. There are many authorized voices that usually talk about Real Madrid and Barcelona with objectivity, but very few of them tend to be as poignant as Argentine legend Jorge Valdano who has a long history with Los Blancos. The former striker started his career as a manager after football but he soon realized that his place was more helpful for the beautiful sport as an analyst and a scholar, today Valdano has written many books about football and he also has a unique point of view about the biggest names in world football.Just last week, we could see him conducting an interview to Pep Guardiola on his ‘Universo Valdano’ show that airs on Spanish cable. This Thursday he was invited by renowned Spanish journalist Jose Ramon de la Morena, to his radio show ‘El Transistor’, where he discussed many interesting topics but the most interesting one was the Spanish giants’ La Liga defeats this past Wednesday. Both Barcelona and Real Madrid lost their matches against Leganes and Sevilla, respectively. As a football analyst, these types of matches usually peak Jorge Valdano’s interest because we don’t get to see grand clubs like these losing on the same day.Valdano’s analysis was more about Real Madrid because losing 3-0 was more shocking than Barcelona’s defeat, the Catalan club’s result happened due to isolated mistakes, whereas Los Blancos were demolished by Sevilla.Valdano en @ElTransistorOC: “El Sevilla encontró pasillos por todos los lados” https://t.co/OnScnFUTwO pic.twitter.com/jJzG4U6GKw— MARCA (@marca) September 27, 2018During the space in which he spoke about Real Madrid’s odd result from last Wednesday, Valdano spoke in detail about the reasons he thinks this happened and he also hinted at the possibility of The Best award ceremony affecting their performance during the same week.“We could see a vastly more tired Real Madrid during the second half of this match, Lopetegui told the players to stay in the back in order to protect the result.”“The Best awards are a distraction from modern football and they are never great for when the team needs resting time, and it possibly doesn’t help in the game’s preparation either.”“There has to be an explanation about the cold manner in which Real Madrid went out and played that game.”“There was once chance from Sevilla before the 15-second mark and then the Andalusian squad offered an exhibition that found the best holes on the wings, Real Madrid couldn’t defend from the sides. The Sevilla players appeared to be more focused, they also looked quicker.”James Rodriguez, Real MadridZidane hails ‘quality’ James Rodriguez after Real Madrid’s win Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Zinedine Zidane reserved special praise for James Rodriguez after his starring role in Real Madrid’s 3-2 win over Levante.“When Real Madrid received the first blow, it was impossible for them to get back in the game. They suffered too much after that.”“They did improve during the second half, but it simply wasn’t enough. Today both Real Madrid and Barcelona can feel bad for their own result, but they can also feel salvaged by their rival’s loss,” said Valdano during the interview on ‘El Transistor’ for Radio Marca and Onda Cero.Last night, both Barcelona and Real Madrid lost on the same day for the first time since January 2015. pic.twitter.com/xr53bRyqbB— Football Factly (@FootballFactly) September 27, 2018Both Spanish giants lose on the same day, three years laterThe last time that Real Madrid and Barcelona lost on the very same day was three years ago, exactly 1,361 days later during the 2014-2015 season. During that time, Carlo Ancelotti was the Real Madrid manager and he was coming out of the historic ‘Decima’ (Real Madrid’s 10th European Cup).Los Blancos really struggled to find their center during that season and they had an overall forgettable performance, they lost 2-1 in Mestalla on the 4th of January, 2017. But FC Barcelona’s situation was a lot different after that Sunday, they lost 1-0 in Anoeta against Real Sociedad in a weird day for manager Luis Enrique who oddly left Lionel Messi on the bench from the start of the match. That defeat served the Catalan club as a moment of clarity, that was good enough for them to win their second treble in history by the end of the season. Messi’s absence at the start of that game would be a warning for Luis Enrique, who never imagined what a historic season the Argentine player would have in every competition he played.Three years later the same thing happened to both clubs, it should be interesting to see how they perform throughout the current season and if one of both clubs will have a historic year. Valdano was right to point out that both clubs losing left everything the same, but Real Madrid has a much more difficult weekend as they face Atletico Madrid at the Bernabeu.Barcelona and Real Madrid in La Liga this season 😂😂 pic.twitter.com/MCDJiQqIMo— SPORTbible (@sportbible) September 27, 2018Which of both clubs will finish the season with more trophies, Real Madrid or Barcelona? Emmis Our Cuts are Considerably More Thoughtful and Measured Than What Weve

first_imgAs we reported late Thursday, Emmis Communications, publisher of the award-winning Texas Monthly, Los Angeles magazine and five other regional titles (I’m considering Country Sampler a Southern regional; you don’t have to), is cutting roughly 40 jobs from its magazine publishing division. That’s 4.5 percent of its workforce, which is a significant number when you consider Gannett, the newspaper publisher, just cut 3 percent—or 1,000 jobs—from its workforce, and I heard about that on a local morning radio broadcast driving to work.More significant, though, was the announcement of Emmis’ 2 percent salary cut across the board for the remaining employees. We’ve heard about frozen salaries at plenty of publishing companies this year, but I can only recall one—Cygnus—that rolled them back, which was a bit of a PR and morale nightmare for them. And this, despite Emmis reporting first quarter publishing division revenue of $22.6 million, up slightly from $22.2 million from the same period last year. Here’s the official statement from Emmis:Earlier this week, Emmis Publishing instituted a series of steps to better position its magazines for success. Those steps included a 4.5 percent workforce reduction, as well as a salary reduction for current employees, generally equaling two percent. Notified employees received generous severance packages and other support. The publishing industry has seen a steady stream of staff reductions and expense cutting in recent months. We believe that the expense reductions we are implementing for the coming year are considerably more thoughtful and measured than what we’ve seen from many of our peers. Emmis Publishing employs some of the most talented people in our industry and is continually honored for excellence. We are very confident in the future of the city and regional magazine business.last_img read more

Foldit gamers improve protein design through crowdsourcing

first_img Journal information: Nature Biotechnology Paper uncovers power of Foldit gamers’ strategies © 2011 PhysOrg.com This document is subject to copyright. Apart from any fair dealing for the purpose of private study or research, no part may be reproduced without the written permission. The content is provided for information purposes only. Proteins are made up of long chains of amino acids which wind up in various shapes due to the chemical properties of each link in the chain. Eventually three dimensional shapes emerge, sort of like balloon animals, and the shape a protein takes determines the activity that it performs. One activity that some proteins, such as enzymes provide, is acting as a catalyst for chemical reactions. Researchers are always interested in finding better catalysts because the better they are the more money can be saved in manufacturing costs of materials that come about as a result of chemical reactions. In earlier versions of the Foldit game, players were simply given existing proteins to play with and asked to find the minimal energy state for them by folding them in optimum ways, this latest version has gone much farther by giving players the opportunity to come up with a whole new protein design. To create the new design, gamers were given a simple beginning structure and some basic ideas about the goal of the new protein, in this case to serve as a better catalyst for a class of Diels-Alder reactions, which are used to synthesize many commercial products. After offering some ideas such as remodeling certain sections to make them behave in certain ways, the gamers went to work folding the proteins using the tools at hand. The first go-round proved mostly futile, with few gamers coming up with good improvements. To improve the results, the team took the best foldings from the first round and fed them back into the game allowing gamers to improve on them. This time, the crowd proved quite adept at coming up with a much improved enzyme; they succeeded in designing a new catalyst that was a hundred times more active than prior designs.Unfortunately, the new protein isn’t really useful though because the chemical reaction that it’s used for doesn’t have any purpose except to serve as a proof of concept. That will change very soon though. The current protein the gamers are working on is an improvement on a protein inhibitor to block the spread of the virus responsible for the 1918 flu pandemic. Explore furthercenter_img More information: Increased Diels-Alderase activity through backbone remodeling guided by Foldit players, Nature Biotechnology (2012) doi:10.1038/nbt.2109AbstractComputational enzyme design holds promise for the production of renewable fuels, drugs and chemicals. De novo enzyme design has generated catalysts for several reactions, but with lower catalytic efficiencies than naturally occurring enzymes. Here we report the use of game-driven crowdsourcing to enhance the activity of a computationally designed enzyme through the functional remodeling of its structure. Players of the online game Foldit5, 6 were challenged to remodel the backbone of a computationally designed bimolecular Diels-Alderase3 to enable additional interactions with substrates. Several iterations of design and characterization generated a 24-residue helix-turn-helix motif, including a 13-residue insertion, that increased enzyme activity >18-fold. X-ray crystallography showed that the large insertion adopts a helix-turn-helix structure positioned as in the Foldit model. These results demonstrate that human creativity can extend beyond the macroscopic challenges encountered in everyday life to molecular-scale design problems. (PhysOrg.com) — Gamers on Foldit have succeeded in improving the catalyst abilities of an enzyme, making it 18-fold more active than the original version. The idea is the brainchild of University of Washington scientist Zoran Popovic who is director of the Center for Game Science, and biochemist David Baker. Together they have created the Foldit site which is a video game application that allows players to work with protein design, rather than shooting virtual aliens. By giving players a basic concept to work with and a box of tools, the team has created a means for crowd sourcing protein design. Those that come up with the most efficient way to fold an enzyme get the most points.
