Coming back into the team after a forgettable performance in the Nidahas Trophy final against Bangladesh last year, the Tamil Nadu all-rounder grabbed the opportunity with both hands and has put himself in contention for a World Cup berth.Having batted higher-up the order in the T20Is against New Zealand, Shankar showcased he is more than handy with the bat. The 28-year-old grabbed eyeballs when he hit a well-paced 45 in India’s 35-run win over New Zealand in the fifth ODI of a five-match series in Wellington after a second successive top-order failure. In the three T20Is, Shankar smashed 84 runs at an impressive strike rate of 155.55.On the other hand, Shankar got very little opportunity to bowl in the ODI series and wasn’t needed at all in the three-match T20I series. Shankar bowled a total of 16 overs, conceding at 4.87 in four ODIs he played in Australia and New Zealand earlier this year. Despite not picking a wicket, Shankar was impressive with the tight lines he bowled.Stressing he wants to get back to thinking wickets whenever he gets the ball in hand, Shankar insisted he has been working hard on all aspects of his game in order to be ready whenever an opportunity comes his way.advertisement”Last time, when I was playing in the Nidahas Trophy, my mindset was to pick wickets. In the recent times, I was much more restrictive mentally. I was just thinking about putting the balls in the good areas. Maybe, in the Australia series, I will look to express myself a lot more if I get to bowl,” Vijay Shankar told indiatoday.in.”I think a lot about my own game. I will try and observe a lot about others. While doing so, I felt I was restricting myself a little.”I was happy with my pace but I can bowl much quicker than what I bowled there [New Zealand]. As I told you, I was much more restrictive. For instance, I was using the short-ball, which I believe is my strength, very well in the Nidahas Trophy. But recently, I didn’t use the short-ball. I didn’t try any variation. I just thought I should hit the right spots. That was my mindset.”Sucess is best when it’s shared ! #TeamIndia #Champions pic.twitter.com/tHIzkEet9KVijay Shankar (@vijayshankar260) February 4, 2019Shankar, on Friday, was named in both the ODI and the T20I squads led by Virat Kohli for the two T20Is and the five ODIs against Australia. The upcoming series will be key as the all-rounder is being considered as one of the World Cup-bound all-rounders for Team India.Speaking at the press conference after the squad announcement, selection committee chairman MSK Prasad said Shankar, with his performances Down Under, has changed the team dynamics in a beat in the lead up to the biggest cricketing event of the year. It’s honour to represent #TeamIndia pic.twitter.com/a433IZVC2ZVijay Shankar (@vijayshankar260) January 18, 2019″Shankar’s performance in the recent series really changed a bit of dynamics and he brings a double impact to the side that’s why have we have included him. We’ll see how he performs in the next few matches,” Prasad said. With India announcing a full-strength squad, it will be interesting to see how the team management finds a balance between giving the reserve players opportunities and allowing the big guns to get game time in what will be their final international assignment before the World Cup.Also Read | Vijay Shankar making a strong case for 2019 World Cup berth: L BalajiAlso Read | Great experience to share dressing room with Dhoni, Kohli and Rohit: Vijay ShankarAlso Read | Both Vijay Shankar and Hardik Pandya for World Cup?
